Finger interest and a romantic breakup and the girl committed suicide.
The woman faces penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
A Missouri woman was charged today by a grand jury in the case of a teenager who committed suicide after being deceived through the social network MySpace, authorities reported. Megan Meier, aged 13, hanged himself in his room in October 2006 after suffering a joke over the Internet by Lori Drew, 49-year-old mother of one of the old friends of the couple.
Drew faces penalties of up to 20 years in prison for conspiracy and for access to protected computers for information in a spirit of inflicting emotional pain. The indictment, filed in the court district of Los Angeles, accuses Drew and others, unidentified, recorded in the MySpace social network with the name "Josh Evans" and use that account to start a romance with virtual Meier.
Local authorities said previously that Drew had created the account to find out what Meier, who lived in the same neighborhood, was saying about his own daughter. The prosecution contends that Drew and others involved violated the rules of MySpace service when using false information to create an account that would allow them to "harass, abuse or harm" to Meier, according to the paper.
The romance between the alleged "Josh" and Meier lasted four weeks, until they reached a time when Drew decided to sever the relationship, authorities said. According to the indictment, when he learned of Drew suicide Meier, ordered one of these unidentified persons "keep their mouths shut" and delete the account.
Meier's mother, Tina, said in November last year to U.S. channel CNN that his daughter had suffered depression since childhood. Also, he indicated that he was "delighted" when he met the beautiful messages of "Josh", but found that the relationship was broken when her daughter was "devastated".
